ambitious Indians went abroad to establish kingdoms. So let’s see which
countries other than India have their names origin from Sanskrit.
1. China- Largest country of the world has derived its name
from Sanskrit word “CINA” referring to Qin dynasty of China.
2. Indonesia-Largest Islamic nation derive its name from the
combination of 2 words “INDOS” coming from Sanskrit “Sindhu” and “NESOS”
meaning island. Europeans simply called it ‘Indonesia’ as it has a lot of
historical impact from India.
3. Malaysia- Derives its name from Sanskrit word “Malay”
(Malay dweep meaning Island of mountains)
4. Iran-Modified form of Sanskrit word “Arya” generally
meaning noble or free.
5. Burma- Derived from Sanskrit word “Brahma Desh”.
6. Singapore- Took its name from “Simha pura” meaning Lion
city.
7. Sri Lanka- Combination of “Sri” meaning Gold or holy and
“Lanka” meaning island.
8. Bangladesh-Sanskrit for land of Bengali
9. Cambodia-Derived from “Kambuja Desh” (Kamboja = one who enjoys beautiful things. from kamaniya bhojah)
10. Thailand-based on “Ratcha Thai” derived from “Raja Thai”

11. Bhutan-Traditionally taken to be a transcription of
Sanskrit “Bhota – anta” meaning “End of Tibet”.
12. Brunei – Possibly influenced from word “Varun” meaning
regent of ocean.
13. Maldives-derived from “Mala dwip” meaning garland of
islands.
14. Nepal- derived from “Nipalaya” meaning at the foot of
the hill. Referring its proximity to Himalayas
15.Afghanistan-comes from word”Avagan” meaning mountainous country.
